FarCry 2 Hands-on Preview

Few next-gen games have got us as excited as Ubisoft Montreal's Far Cry 2. Having seen the game numerous times over the last year the prospect of getting our hands on a near-complete build of the Xbox 360 game for an uninterrupted gaming session was something we simply couldn't refuse. We headed into the free-roaming African environment to see if this ambitious FPS has what it takes to compete with current large-scale FPS king Crysis and switched off our Xbox 360 hours later desperate to get our hands on the final game.

After choosing one of nine playable characters (we chose Josip Idromeno, a 48-year-old Albanian and ex-paratrooper and bodyguard) we were introduced to the game via an impressive cab journey, with our guide giving us a rough outline of the political climate and an overview of what's going on. We took the opportunity to have a look around from the backseat, taking in the glorious views, spotting a plane taking off and watching as a cattle farmer herded his animals across the road.

More than anything else this intro demonstrated the sheer size of the game. The cab driver took a pretty direct route to our destination, but even so it took a fair few minutes to get there. It also showed that movement from place to place isn't going to be easy. We passed through a heavily guarded check point that required some sweet talking and a bribe from our cabbie. Anyway, as interesting and beautiful as this journey was, we wanted action and it wasn't far away.

We don't want to spoil too much of the opening so we'll just say that our first fire-fight came after an explosion caused us to run from a building. We capped a guy in the head with our pistol and grabbed his automatic weapon. Explosions were ringing in our ears and bullets were being sprayed from one end of a road to the other. A war had broken out between the United Front for Liberation and Labour (UFLL) and Alliance for Popular Resistance (APR) - the two rival factions in the game - and we were right in the middle of it. A Jeep full of soldiers pulled up, only to go spiralling into the air in a ball of flames moments later. Taking this opportunity we ran as fast as we could away from the action, but it was no use. A few shots in the back and we were eating dirt, although thankfully help was on hand and we were whisked away to safety.

Far Cry 2 revolves around the two warring factions and an arms dealer known as the Jackal. The Jackal is supplying weapons to both factions, effectively fuelling the war and profiting from both parties. Your task is to take him out, denting the war effort on both sides and hopefully bringing an end to it completely. Of course, this won't be easy, so you'll spend an awful lot of time taking missions for each faction as you gradually home in on your target. It's how these missions work and the open nature of the environment that looks to separate Far Cry 2 from its FPS competitors.

Missions are handed out by factions and by arms dealers. Faction missions curry favour with the factions and earn you some much needed diamonds (the game's currency), while arms dealer missions give you access to new weapons, purchasable from a computer terminal. Missions themselves aren't especially different to those seen in other games (kill so and so, get some intelligence info from someone, etc) but the way you approach each can vary quite drastically. Your incredibly handy map shows all routes to your objective as well as any locations you've marked by using your monocular - such as sniper positions and ammo crates - giving you a tactical advantage.

Missions in Far Cry 2 don't take place in enclosed worlds, so you're free to approach them from any angle, on foot or in a vehicle, armed with a rocket launcher, sniper rifle or machine gun, or simply a machete for stealth kills. The choice is yours, and this is further emphasised by the way NPCs change the way they behave at night. Far Cry 2 features a full 24-hour day/night cycle (which you can advance to a certain time by sleeping in a safe house), so if you want to play a mission using stealth you can sleep until its midnight. If you're going in all guns blazing and don't want to be caught off-guard by an enemy lurking in the shadows, head in at noon. We replayed one of the early missions numerous ways and each time the mission felt very different.

Combat so far seems to be action packed and pretty intense, with enemies demonstrating impressive AI and chasing us across the map in their Jeeps. Your character can only carry four weapons at once, with one slot being taken up by a machete, so it pays to plan ahead. You're allowed one weapon from each of the three categories: primary, secondary and special. Primary weapons include sniper rifles, assault rifles and shotguns; secondary weapons include pistols, machine pistols and one-handed weapons; and special weapons include rocket launchers, flame throwers and other unique items you'll come across throughout the game.

Weapons from dealers are in perfect condition, but anything you pick up from a downed enemy won't be and could jam on you during combat, or fail to work altogether. You'll be able to tell how much of a state a weapon is in by looking at it, with rust and wear and tear being clearly visible. Dealerships will also allow you to upgrade weapons, although this will come at a price.

As well as the various guns the game has to offer, you'll also be able to carry grenades and Molotov cocktails, ideal for blowing up Jeeps full of enemies or for setting fire to the long grass. We know we're in a time where saving the planet is an extremely hot topic, but watching a fire spread from an accidentally exploded Jeep, to some tall grass and then a clump of trees is incredibly satisfying and a great demonstration of next-gen technology. The way the smoke blows across the sky in the direction of the wind is a nice touch too. While we're on the subject of nice touches, the weather system in Far Cry 2 is stunning to see in action. Trees blow, rain pours and it verges on looking real. The Xbox 360 version we tested looks great, although we expect the PC game will have the edge when running on a high-end PC.

Enemies aren't the only danger in Far Cry 2, with your character suffering from Malaria. From time to time you'll get weak and require a tablet so you'll need to do favours for people in order to get hold of them. Staying in good health is a key component of the game, with your character able to dig out bullets using tweezers and perform various other minor, but rather gruesome, medical procedures. These help sustain your health but you'll need to inject yourself with a syringe in order to have a fully replenished health bar. This makes for combat that feels similar to DICE's Battlefield Bad Company, although Far Cry 2 seems to be the harder game.

One unique aspect of the game that we've yet to fully experience is the buddy system. Throughout the game you can essentially befriend NPCs who will then offer you assistance during combat (bringing you back from near death situations) and give you alternate ways to tackle missions. One of the early missions in the game required us to take out a group of NPCs and one of our buddies gave us a way to get them to relocate to a more vulnerable position. We ignored it, choosing to go in all guns blazing with a grenade launcher, but the offer was there if we wanted it. We're hopeful that buddies will play an important part in the game and offer plenty of help during missions. We've also only really dabbled with the vehicles in the game, sticking mainly to the banged out motor we started the game with. Although very different games in tone and style, a comparison to GTA4 can definitely be made.

With Far Cry 2 set for release on PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 24 (the day our pockets, piggy banks and savings accounts are dreading) we can't wait to see how the final game plays out over what looks set to be a fairly enormous campaign that stretches over 50 km2 of land. We can't be certain, given that we've only sampled a fraction of what Ubisoft Montreal has created, but if we were betting men we'd put money on Far Cry 2 being one of the best first-person shooters of the year.

Far Cry 2 is due for release in Europe for PC, Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 on October 24.

GC 2008: Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 Preview

Command & Conquer is undoubtedly the biggest RTS franchise known to man and part of that resounding success can be traced back to their Red Alert series. It’s been 7 long years since we last saw a Red Alert title and fans have been long anticipating it... Fear not though, Red Alert 3 is just around the corner and it’s bringing a Hollywood cast with it.

Red Alert 3 takes place in a parallel universe to ours, in a world where World War II never took place and instead of Germany attempting to rise through to attempt world domination, the Soviet Union are the world’s biggest threat. Red Alert 3 focuses on the conflicts between the three super powers; the Soviets, the Allies and the new faction, the Empire of the Rising Sun. The game will feature 27 missions, with 9 being for each faction, but what EA Los Angeles hasn’t really touched upon so far, is that these 27 missions are built from the ground up to full support a co-op element. In the words of Red Alert 3’s Senior Producer, Amer Ajami, “there is no such thing as a single player campaign in Red Alert 3”.

The whole co-op thing doesn’t mean you can’t play alone. What it does mean is that if you choose to play alone, you will have a computer controlled AI buddy alongside you. The whole co-op inclusion means that you and a buddy can tear it up together now, whether you decide to team up together on the same map to take on your adversaries or whether you both take different routes working towards the final objective, the choice is yours, but working together will be key.

You’ll also be pleased to know that if you play alone, your computer controlled AI buddy is not a complete idiot... in fact, he’s quite the opposite. The AI is created so that he’ll never get in your way but at the same time, they’ll never complete the mission for you ... that must be initiated by your good self. EA’s intention was never to put the burden of two armies on you but that doesn’t mean you can’t call for help or tell them what to attack because you can. After all, they are meant to react as if it was a co-op buddy, so expect them to know the objectives and help you out as well.

On show was the 5th mission from the Soviet campaign which takes place on the island of Mykonos, Greece. The objectives are simple; take over the allies’ oil mining operation near the deployment zone, eliminate the allies’ naval patrol in the area and then locate and capture the allies’ science facility. The Mykonos map is very water infested and so you must make use of your naval and air units to do the ferrying around and ground work.

If you’re new to the Red Alert franchise and wanted a taste after EA’s last Command & Conquer console outing, Tiberium Wars, you will notice a lot of differences between the two. Sure the concept is the same, I meant they are both RTS titles, but the environments are totally different. You’ll notice that Red Alert’s world is such a colourful, outlandish environment with bright, vivid, strong summer colours everywhere. The reds, blues and greens are so bright and cheerful. Compare that to Tiberium War’s grey’s and blacks and not only does that make a difference to the whole experience, but it differs the mood as well.

On top of the colour scheme, you will also notice that Red Alert 3 features naval battles which Tiberium Wars did not feature. The naval combat has always been a big feature of the Red Alert series and it’s great to see it make a return with some very impressive water visuals.

Red Alert’s cinematic scenes are very Command & Conquery, with cheesy dialogues and an all-star cast to boot, they make for some pretty awesome viewing. The cast list contains such celebrities as Jenny McCarthy (ex-playboy model & actress), Randy Couture (UFC), Tim Curry (everything), George Takei (Mr Sulu on Star Trek!), JK Simmons (Spider-Man) and Peter Stormare (Prison Break). Oh did I mention that slamming British hottie Gemma Atkinson was in it as well... How the hell did that slip my mind!? Either way, the cast alone is enough to entice people in to Red Alert 3.

Red Alert 3 not only looks like another great RTS title for the Command & Conquer series but being able to play the campaign in co-op over Live is a fantastic addition because come on, there is nothing better than kicking ass with a mate. With an all star cast and plenty of bright vibrant environments as well, Red Alert surely has what it takes to rival the other RTS games that we’ll see over the coming months.

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is available for Xbox 360 and PC this coming October/November.

WAR the “Fastest-Selling New MMO of All Time” - EA

Age of Reckoning has become “the fastest-selling new MMO of all time”, according to publisher EA and developer Mythic Entertainment.
Over 500,000 players have registered for the fantasy MMO across North America, Europe and the Oceanic territories since the game was launched last week.
“In just one week we have a half a million people playing WAR online, and the ranks of Order and Destruction are growing at a record-breaking pace for a new MMORPG,” said Mark Jacobs, co-founder and general manager of Mythic.
“We spent years working to provide players with the most stable, epic, and polished online world we could, but it is the players that have truly brought the Age of Reckoning to life.”
The key word in EA's announcement is "new." When the World of Warcraft expansion The Burning Crusade launched in January 2007, the title sold 2.4 million in its first 24 hours--but technically, it wasn't a "new" MMO.

Quantum of Solace: The Game

I was really impressed when I saw the gameplay on the new James Bond video game. I believe things are finally looking up for gamers who want to see their favorite movies on their computers or consoles. And that's because the developers are paying more attention and the big movie companies understand the profit to be made out of this. Plus, they understand that they can't just shove down a dev's throat a game project two month before the movie released and say "have it done by then".

That said, there will always be bad games made out of good movies (and probably vice-versa), and this can happen because of many factors. Ramblings aside, let's not get even further into this debate, and talk about our all-time favorite super spy: James Bond.
With Casino Royale and Daniel Craig, things took a new turn for the Bond franchise. A more humble and down to earth 007 was introduced to the public. And probably wanting to keep it fresh and of course because of the money, Activision got the rights to make video games after this new Bond.
And they are starting with the 22nd movie in the long-living series - Quantum of Solace. Quantum of Solace is, as you will see from the movie launching sometime in November, the sequel to Casino Royale.

Activision made every effort to have a strong game, and they started from the ground up. What better engine to use for and action game than the Call of Duty 4 engine? CoD 4 is one of the best and most played FPS game to date. Its realism is unmatched in many ways.
Of course, the highly scripted AI used in CoD 4 is not very well suited for a Bond game. So it has been the "victim" of a complete re-write, making enemies smart and adaptive.
Quantum of Solace video game is played in both 1st and 3rd person modes, depending on the situation. Bond and his enemies can take cover behind objects, and the camera will change accordingly.

This opens up a lot of possibilities, and players can experience different approaches to scenes that are already in the movie, like a famous chase scene. There are two types of covers: hard and soft. The soft ones, like crates for example, can be blown to pieces by weapon fire and grenades. Hard ones like walls and metal stuff are there to last however.
Since this is based on an action movie, the game doesn't have to be that restrictive anymore. Thus, many cool things like bullet time have been added. You can use stealth to quietly take down your enemies, or you can be loud and deadly instead, or any combination of the two. The great visual quality of the game lets you use the shadows for example to track your foes while they don't see you coming.
The weapons are what you'd expect from a top secret agent with a license to kill, but with the added Call of Duty flavor: very realistic and very deadly. 1 shot - 1 kill, if placed right. Unfortunately, you abide by the same rule, so be careful and play smart.

Environments are fully destructible, will change dynamically, and are interactive. Shooting a TNT barrel or an electrical switch will result in an explosion that can be used to your advantage.
You receive updates for your mission objectives through your mobile phone, though it's a bit odd that Bond's (and everybody else's) cool Sony Ericsson phone got replaced by a noname one.
Music is of course themed after the movie and it changes dynamically, influenced by the action pace. There are both indoors and outdoors missions and they look pretty fancy. Textures and everything else seems to be high quality on both PC and consoles. Overall, the game seems to complete the movie and goes into details more than the 2 hours of action you see at the cinema.

Multiplayer is another story. Many classic and new multiplayer modes like deathmatch, team deathmach, domination and conflict amongst other can be found in Quantum of Solace. Up to 12 players online support and a player ranking similar to Call of Duty 4 will bring a competitive edge to it. Add to that new modes designed just for this game like Bond vs Bond and you'll start to get the whole picture.
As a conclusion, there is a reason to be excited while waiting for this game for both fans of the movie and gamers. And probably one of the few Bond games "for the books". Daniel Craig was also very supportive and lent its voice and appearance to the developers, and a few other key actors agreed to do the same. So hope for the best and check it out this November when it launches with the movie.

Half-Life 2 Cheat: Portal Gun Hack

This process modifies your game files, so make back-ups of the proper files and directories before attempting this hack.

1. You need both Portal and Half-life 2 for starters. Install or re-install both games now.

2. Back up your Portal directory. Unless you changed the install path, the directory is in ...\Steam\steamapps\(your_username)\portal. If you make a mistake during this hack, you may need to re-download Portal through Steam (or at worse, Half-life 2 through Steam).

3. Download and install GCFScape if you do not have it already. This program allows you to access the cached game files for games using the Source engine.

4. Head into the directory ...\Steam\steamapps\ for all the available GCF archives available. Open the file half-life 2 content.gcf via GCFScape. Click the hl2 folder on the left pane of the GCFScape Explorer window. Right mouse click maps and select the command Extract to place all the contents of the maps folder into the directory ...\Steam\steamapps\the_great_bundini\portal\portal. This merges Half-life 2 maps with the Portal map folder.

5. Repeat the above step with the scenes folder via GCFScape.

6. Boot up Steam to run Portal. Drop the developer console with ‘~’ (you may need to enable it under your keyboard options or enable it via the -console command switch on the executable's shortcut).

7. On the developer console, type maps * to list all the available maps; this should inclde the Half-life 2 maps imported from the previous steps. Type map and then the name of that map (i.e., map d1_canals_01).

8. Once the map is loaded and you can play, drop the console and enable the cheats for Portal by entering sv_cheats 1. Give yourself all weapons (including the Portal Gun) by entering impulse 101. You may need to input upgrade_portalgun to enable you to fire both portals.

9. Enjoy the havoc. Note that this hack also works with Episode 1 and Episode 2. You will notice that while NPCs from Half-life cannot pass through portals, all other inert objects (including yourself) and weapons fire will pass through with no problems.

Half-Life 2 Cheat: Spawn Alyx's Weapon

Enter npc_create_equipment weapon_alyxgun in the dev console then type npc_create npc_combine_s which spawns a combine trooper with Alyx's gun. Then simply kill the trooper ang get the gun. Note, when you pick up the gun looks like a giant block on the bottom left corner of your screen.

Half-Life 2 Hint: Rocksploration

In the Chapter Anti-Citizen, Freman can reach the rooftop of the building blocked by some rocks on its stairs. After D.O.G. hops onto the dropship, crouch jump onto the sofa and Freman can jump past the rocks. Bring a box or similar object to act as a platform. It is barely possible to reach the roof of the building -- there's nothing there, but it's a little hidden area.

Fable 2: They Stole Halo's Energy Sword

GameXtract writes "Mommy! He stole my sword! Okay…well considering both titles are on the 360 the transfer was more mature, but in the end it looks like Fable 2 will be getting a piece of the energy sword from the Halo series. The video was posted in which it shows off a weapon very similar to that of the energy sword you will find in the Halo series. Currently the epic pirate holding the energy sword does not do much but hangs the sword around his back, and walks around with pride silently telling everyone to back the fuck off. I still say the dog in the video given is way cooler, but that's just me. Take a look at the energy sword in Fable 2 after the jump."

The Five: Grand Theft Auto IV (PC)

1. The perfect version? If you have a high-end PC, you're in for a real treat. With upgraded everything and no concessions made, with the right machine, it could be tempting to bypass the icky mouse/keyboard combo for the USB-enabled Xbox 360 pad (or an old PlayStation 2 controller with the Super Joy Box) and gloat at your console buddies. However, those special Xbox 360 episodes will be staying on the Xbox 360.

2. Multiplayer will be beefier. Although Rockstar isn't commenting on all the additions, it could include new modes and support more players. There is also a new filter for match searches, which will help simplify things. C'mon, Rockstar, why sit on the nitty-gritty multiplayer details when single-player is where the game truly shines?

3. Warm up your video cards. GTA IV PC will have a pile of graphical upgrades, such as increased draw distances. If you have the video card and monitor to support it, you can scale the resolution all the way up to a whopping 2560x1600. But in the "Three Leaf Clover" mission that we saw, Miko, Packie and his Irish cronies actually looked pretty similar, in terms of facial features, at the highest resolution. The fact that we were viewing the demonstration on a 70" screen may also have been important, but could running the game at bleeding-edge resolutions also highlight its graphical shortcomings?

4. This movie is about you! When playing GTA IV on your PC, the game will constantly be recording 30-second clips that you can edit later. Cut, splice, and add filters to your favorite replays, and then upload them to sites like the Rockstar Games Social Club.

5. Who cares! We want the mods! The GTA franchise has a healthy modding community that won't wait around for Rockstar to deliver new content. With a heap of total-conversion mods designed for GTA: San Andreas, for example, players could change the game into GTA: Vice City, Resident Evil or even a Rally game. With the new GTA engine, modders are going to be quite busy, to say the least.

The Big Question: Doesn't everyone already own it? With 10 million units sold, does the PC version add enough to get GTA fans to double-dip? While the video editing sounds cool, all the sexy visual upgrades will only be seen with the hefty video hardware capable of delivering them. Since Rockstar is keeping silent on multiplayer, we don't have a clue what's going on there. Unless you still haven't played the game, own a big rig that can handle everything already, and want to get your hands dirty with mods -- we say hit the couch with Mr. Bellic and stick with the console version.

First Crysis Warhead Review

Warhead, says PC Zone, remedies many of the issues that players had with the first game; the sometimes dodgy AI, unspectacular aliens turning up... Very high praise follows..."With its budget price and improved multiplayer, there's more than enough here to cheer nay-sayers," says the mag,"One of the most striking things about Warhead is the way it shakes the template Crysis snowglobe and has its constituent parts drift and settle into surprising new patterns. In Crysis encounters with enemies were heavily cordoned off from each other, in Warhead anything goes."It's a frenzy of intelligent and original level design, far away from the Far Cry model that Crysis aped," the review continues.Nanosuited enemies, revamped aliens, bog-standard Koreans and a whole bunch of the monolithic Hunter tentacle beasts all turn up in an unpredictable order says PCZ, making for some "awe-inspiring" battles."Warhead encourages you to be constantly on the move, often in vehicles with big guns, and always with fire and broken fuel storage tanks left in your wake. However, this is not to say that you can't take your time if you want to."But are the aliens better? "A fairer question might be 'are the aliens as oddly unexciting as last time round?' - the answer to which is a straight no. They're a lot more dynamic now, they get into scrapes with the Korean army and they jump from rock to rock with AI routines that have a lot more in common with your be-nanosuited foes."The game does stumbles somewhat in its mundane tale of camaraderie with a rogue pilot called Sean O'Neill," the review continues, adding that story never quite dips into a naffness that particularly harms the game."Warhead honestly is the finest burst of action gaming released so far this year, and if you're canny then you'll be able to pick it up for a mere £15 from online retailers. It's a five hour tour-de-force that's plugged the holes in Crysis with diamonds."We're very keen to get our hands on it. Psyonix Are Unreal

The developer will use Unreal Engine 3 for their PSN game with the awesome title Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars.

Psyonix Studios today announced that it has signed a licensing agreement with Epic Games. Under terms of this agreement, the developer will have access to Unreal Engine 3. Psyonix will use the middleware for their upcoming arena-based online auto sports game for PSN, Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars.
"We've been working with other studios using Unreal technology for years now," said Dave Hagewood, director of development, Psyonix Studios. "I'm very proud to be licensing the engine for our first title developed entirely in-house and am blown away by the fact that Epic goes out of its way to make its industry-leading technology affordable for developers of games like this."
"Finding ways to bring our engine technology to creative, independent studios is important to us, and Psyonix is a team that really fits the mold," said Mark Rein, vice president, Epic Games. "Battle-Cars does a great job demonstrating the versatility of Unreal Engine 3. I think PlayStation Network users are going to find it to be fun and unique."
Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars is expected to release Fall 2008.

Heroes over Europe

The sequel to the mighty World War II flight combat game Heroes of the Pacific, Heroes over Europe takes place in the same historical period: WWII. With almost 40 customizable realistic warplanes models (Spitfires, Messerschmitts, Mustangs, bombers, torpedoes carriers, etc), the gamer will be transferred from the Pacific skies to the cloudy and foggy skies of Europe.

As an Allied trooper you will take part in virtual fights inspired from real events such as the attacks on London and the destruction of Berlin. Objectives like bombing buildings, launch torpedoes, escort convoys, are classical missions which will bring diversity in the gameplay, but everything is developed around the dogfight experience. Unlike other similar titles, Heroes over Europe will bring something new. I'm talking about the ACE Kill, that bullet-time mode that shows the weak spots of a hunted plane including the cockpit and the pilot in it. You just have to follow one of the enemy's planes and when you are enough close to him, the ACE Kill can be activated. This comes with a price, as the whole mode is controlled by a meter. You have only a couple of seconds to choose the weakest spot and shoot the target. Now the good news is that everything is done spectacular in slow-motion with the help of an dynamic camera view. And here we come to the perspective view. You can use the classical view from behind the plane, or the new free-look, which can be manipulated in any angle around the plane. In this mode you can actually see the realistic localized damage system. Every bullet will rip-off material from the aircraft's body, and every explosion will look different depending on which part of the airplane you have chosen to shoot.

In general this game is about showing-off. Everything looks amazing, from planes and cockpits, to landscapes and landmarks (3D representations of London or Berlin with the most important buildings). You don't fly above a set of pictures, but above real buildings and highly rendered landscapes. Clouds are volumetric which offers in different situation tactical approaches. You can actually hide in such a cloud, and even the A.I will use the same tactic if it is possible.

16 missions in singleplayer campaign will make you continue to destroy the enemy online. Up to 16 players online in a single dogfight mission it's enough to satisfy your thirst for blood. All the warplanes models will not be available in multiplayer from the beginning. You have to achieve different ranks to unlock further models. Every multiplayer map will allow only a couple of warplanes depending on the location and the combat mode. In this way the battles should become much more balanced and based more on the player's dexterity. If you think that this is not enough, additional downloadable content will be available from the launch.

Football Manager Goes 3D.

attended a special event last night to showcase the most important new features that will appear the latest instalment of the Football Manager series. The most ambitious - though potentially risky - of these new ideas is undoubtedly the new 3D match engine, which has been beta tested over the past few months on Football Manager Live. Using full 3D and motion-capture taken from SEGA Japan's Virtua Striker football game, wannabe Wengers will now be able to see their team's exploits in three dimensions and from multiple camera angles, as well as rewind and fast forward the action. Those either afraid of change or with slower computers will still have the option of using the 2D match engine, however. The second big addition is added interactivity with your assistant manager. You're number two will now provide pre-match and, intriguingly, in-match feedback on your team's performance, motivation, whether if your tactics are up to scratch, or which players aren't pulling their weight.

As with every Football Manger update, a raft of new media features has also been introduced. Players will now have to give pre- and post-match press conferences with local and national media, with managers now able to develop relationships (or feuds) with individual journalists. The FM programming team has also completely re-written the transfer system this time round. This major under-the-bonnet change has been made to make the in-game transfer market more realistic, with AI-controlled teams' purchasing habits made more authentic. A new transfer rumour feature has also been added too, with players now able to see the latest serious speculation - and spurious gossip -emerging from FM's virtual tabloids. Some of the other areas to get a revamp are individual player training, board interaction and club finances, which have all also been expanded upon in this latest instalment. Football Manager 2009 is released on November 14th.

Killer Betties

China has always been a land of mystery and adventure. The history of this amazing place was virtually unknown for many years in the west. Few people knew that during the time of the Roman Empire China had its own more powerful state known as the Han Dynasty. By the year 189 AD this dynasty was growing old and enfeebled and change was in the wind. A number of revolts would topple the Han and for a time the nation would be split into three mighty kingdoms known as Wu, Shu and Wei. The story of this epic time was told in the novel ‘Romance of the Three Kingdoms’ and for many years has been simulated in games with the same title.
Romance of the Three Kingdoms XI (RTK from this point on) is a turn based strategy game simulating the struggles of the later Han and the successor states that fought for China from 184 AD through the division of China into three states. There are a number of starting set ups representing the various factions in different years during this time, and even a fantasy scenario where all warlords are the same age and you can be anyone. There are also scenarios representing various parts of the RTK novel that players can take part in.
Players assume the role of the supreme warlord for the faction they select and each leader is different. The characters in the game are rated in a number of separate and important abilities that effect how they fight, govern and build and raise and train forces. These ratings include a score for war, leadership, politics, intelligence, charm, and how they handle horses, pikes, crossbows, ships, siege weapons and some leaders are also rated with special fighting abilities and even the temperament of the characters are taken into account.
The object of the game is to control all the cities and provinces of Han era China. Players must raise armies and train and equip them, make sure they are fed and paid and must develop the infrastructure in the areas they control to maintain a credible military force and to eventually control China. In order to rule, players must search for and recruit followers and after they join you they must be paid and kept happy or they will leave.
Each turn you can issue orders to carry out various tasks in the areas you control to your officers, as well as try to capture enemy cities and defend your own. The way the game is set up even characters with low war scores can be extremely valuable if they have high intelligence, or politics or charm or combinations of these. Any three characters can work on a project but depending on their stats and the nature of the project the time it takes to finish varies.
Each city in China is different with different terrain and the number of structures it can support also varies by size. For example a mountain city may have 10 slots and a large river city may have 15. You can build whatever you like on the slots but the choices are limited. Basically you want farms, markets and barracks in each city and a combination of the other types such as workshops for weapons and shipyards on rivers. The amount of farms and markets and their support buildings regulates the amount of food and money you get at tax time.
You need food to feed the people in cities as well as your troops. Without food soldiers will leave you and your empire will die. All of your characters must be paid a certain amount of money based on the position they hold in your army. Positions can be assigned automatically or given to any general you like if they qualify for the position. You also need money to raise troops, build weapons and ships and buy horses for your armies.
Each general in your army can control a certain amount of troops according to their rank. This number can be increased through promotions and technical research. When in battle soldiers are lost when they fight enemies and engage enemy cities and walls in battle. When a general losses all his men he is either captured or is returned to the nearest city you control. Generals can also use different formations and strategies depending on troop type and the moral of their forces.
The map board is extremely well done and has a nice change of seasons and excellent battle effects. Lively battles and vivid fires as well as nice sounds go with each battle. The characters each have their own illustrations and include brief historical backgrounds and important game information. The interface is extremely simple and well laid out and the game includes a tutorial, but this is not all inclusive and it’s recommended you read the full glossary to understand all the things you can do here.
There are a number of usual and fun things in the game, one of the better is intelligent characters can be recruited by debates, and warriors by duels. The mechanics of duels and debates is quite clever and is done in a surrealistic way that is actually a bit of an art in of itself.
For a game system that goes back almost 20 years its surprising how fresh and original this game seems. The music has a nice period feel even if it is a bit repetitive at times. There are no voiceovers as such but the game does include nice sound effects to mark events in the game. While the game plays slow at points as you can be at peace for years at a time, during a fight it’s very active and will keep your attention. This game is more like a war game rather then an adventure but it is a solid game and true to it’s subject matter.

11 playable Spore prototypes released

In a rather unorthodox move, Maxis has made several playable prototype versions of Spore available for download.

"One of the ways in which we explore possible design directions is by building simple, playable prototypes that we can play around with to get a sense for a particular system," it says on the official site. "Usually these prototypes are never seen by the public, but we thought some of the more intrepid players out there might enjoy playing around with a few of our early Spore prototypes." Unusual indeed, but nevertheless there are 11 different prototypes up for download for anyone interested in playing early, bugged versions of videogames. Check them all out on the Spore website.

Activision Confirms StarCraft II for 2009

Activision are currently having the time of their lives, with Blizzard and themselves joining hand in one of the now biggest gaming companies around. Activision Blizzard are currently holding the Activate Asia Pacific conference in Auckland New Zealand to show their sales prowess from the Christmas line-up to regional representatives of retailers. In the fray, Managing Director Philip Earl made quite bold predictions about market shares for the upcoming Christmas, including sales of Wrath of the Lich King

The interesting fact with this presentation is that while we recently got confirmation that StarCraft II won't be joining us for the Christmas of 2008, we WILL be seeing StarCraft II sometime during 2009.
Next year's offerings from Activision Blizzard should include highly anticipated PC strategy title StarCraft II, the sequel to one of the world's most enduringly popular games.

While this isn't a bold statement by any measure, it's nice to hear that communication inside the massive company talks in the terms of "2009" rather than "sometime in the distant future". Most predictions of StarCraft II's release date range around 2009, so fans will not get overly surprised by this announcement. Seeing how the release schedule for Diablo II is at least slightly linked to that of StarCraft II, there are probably plenty of Diablo fans out there that are happy to know this.A word of caution though! Even though Activision Blizzard owns Blizzard, they have always been a very independent company, regardless of owners, and could very well hold StarCraft back to 2010 just to prove us wrong...

FC2 hang glider makes sequel “truly a Far Cry game”

It can’t be Far Cry without a hang glider, right? Apparently not.
Showing off Far Cry 2 at Games Convention, dev narrative man Patrick Redding said the powerless flying thing was an essential addition to the game.
“There are about 14 vehicles in total, including various armed pick-up trucks, rovers, dune buggies and, of course, the inevitable hang glider we have to have for it to be truly a Far Cry game,” he told VG247.
We didn’t get to see the hang glider in action, unfortunately. We saw Patrick using a boat, if that’s any consolation.
Game’s out for PC, PS3 and 360 before the end of the year.
